I don’t know if I agree about the platinum…
February 6, 2006, 10:01 pmBecause I don’t know how platinum diamonds are mined. But this sounds like a good idea as far as spending less money on a diamond alternative, yes?
Moissanite and platinum engagement rings are other types of diamond alternative engagement rings that many couples are now choosing. Moissanite is a lab-created stone that looks just like a diamond, but it is a cheaper alternative. It has the same brilliance and hardness of a diamond at a fraction of the cost. If you choose platinum for the metal of the ring, however, you will also be increasing the price.

Diamond Alternatives - Moissanite
February 4, 2006, 10:02 pmWhat the hell is Moissanite you ask? Check it…
… moissanite is a lab-created imitation diamond. It naturally occurs in nature and its scientific name is silicon carbide, but it occurs in very small quantities. It is only slightly less than the diamond on the Mohs scale of hardness, being 9.4 as compared to the diamond at 10.
Hey, if I end up having to choose an alternative to diamonds, I can certainly live with a man-made one, especially if it’s cheaper… more bling for me…
More about Moissanite. And while you’re there, you can always get me one for Valentine’s Day.
That, or cash.

So what can we do about Conflict Diamonds?
February 1, 2006, 11:36 pmChild.
I saw the film, you know the one I was talking about the other day? And I cried, I admit it… and I’m not ashamed. If you watched that and you didn’t cry then seriously? You’re dead inside. Dead. I said. Dead.
So that got me to thinking… what can we do about blood diamonds? And are there ways we can get the sparkle without making another human being suffer?
Of course there are. Here’s what I thought of so far…
- Use vintage diamonds or buy pre-owned ice. This was you still get the bling from a diamond that has already been processed. Recyling, you dig?
- Use diamond substitutes like cubic zironias or mossanites.Get the shine without the aristocrat fine.
- Buy diamonds from countries that partcipate in the Kimberly Process.”The Kimberley Process is a joint government, international diamond industry and civil society initiative to stem the flow of conflict diamonds - rough diamonds that are used by rebel movements to finance wars against legitimate governments.”
I know it’s not an extensive list. But I’m working on it. My belief is that we can have diamonds and be socially conscious.
