Blood Diamond: The Movie

June 8, 2006, 12:54 pm

I was reading up on this movie, in production now, called Blood Diamond. It’s directed by Edward Zwick, who also directed The Last Samurai and Courage Under Fire, and will film on location in Port Edward, South Africa; Maputo, Mozambique and Cape Town, South Africa.

The synopsis is based around the horrific civil war in Sierra Leone, circa 1999, revolving primarily with ‘blood diamonds,” also known as ‘’conflict diamonds”. Which are the precious stones used to finance rebellions, privateers, and terrorists. Told through the story of Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio), a South African mercenary, and Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou), a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their varied histories as such must come together in a common quest. As Archer, in prison for smuggling, finds out that Solomon – who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields – has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), an American journalist, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory. A journey that could save Solomon’s family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have, all as they attempt to thwart the syndicate that controls the local diamond mining industry.

Thus far, a release date is idealized for late in this year.

But it made me start wondering, will this story actually bring attention to the fundamentals of the issue, through the use of the star power at its disposal? Or will it just become an idealistic voyage of fanfare by those who have no real grasp of what dangerous ground they toil upon?

Why should we avoid conflict diamonds

    June 3, 2006, 3:06 pm

Article delving into why avoiding blood diamonds, is so very necessary.

Should we be concerned about buying conflict or blood diamonds? What are the moral and financial implications of buying blood diamonds?

Buying diamonds for most people comes at a time when they are buying an item of jewellery such as diamond earrings, an engagement ring etc. This not only involves a major financial investment but an emotional one as well. The jewellery is likely to be kept in the family for years to come and so being confident about what you are buying is paramount.

In a way you need to feel that you are not only buying your diamonds from a reputable source but also that your supplier, whether it be an online retailer or traditional high street shop, obtains it’s goods from sources that also meet certain social, political and environmental responsibilities.

No Conflict Diamonds | Blood Diamonds are for Never

    June 1, 2006, 1:37 pm

For those who might not know, the Kimberly Process is a joint venture by the gov’t, the diamond industry, and civil society initiatives for the purpose of stemming the flow of conflict diamonds - rough diamonds that are used by rebels to finance wars against gov’ts.

Which no rational humanitarian can argue against being wonderful, at least ideally.

But in the process, many see a large degree of loopholes remaining. Namely in the continued existence of agriculturally decimating mining in areas that rape the land for any other use, child labor run at the cost of veritable slavery, and a general need of real independent management and monitoring … to name a few.

To which came to me upon some browsing, for some further information on possible oversight, the efforts of One Sky’s Blood Diamonds are for Never campaign. So that the preventative measures of the K.P. can at some point, hopefully, give some activities for other’s searching through the same questions raised here not a month ago. Because, as consumers, don’t you want to be able to trust the diamond industry enough to be able to live with what you wear? Because at what cost, can you afford to bling?
