No Conflict Diamonds | More on Synthetic Diamonds and Jeweler Bias

June 5, 2006, 12:33 pm

What makes this article so interesting for me, is how it discusses the differences between mined and created diamonds, rationally and in laymen’s terms. All while including the incredibly large price disparity, a brief conversation on indoctrination, and the conflict diamond monopoly, replete with some short information about cutting operations.

New synthetic diamonds are so closely resemble mined diamonds that the naked eye cannot tell the difference, often saving consumers enough money to make a down-payment on a new home or buy a car. Unfounded diamond jeweler arrogance, pretentiousness, and snootiness has gone too far!

My girlfriend has been parading around town with a magnificent 4-carat Round Brilliant cut synthetic diamond set in a stunning 14K solid gold filigree solitaire ring setting for a year now. [ continued ]

No Conflict Diamonds | Bling: Consequences and Repercussions

    June 4, 2006, 4:07 pm

So, I was reading this interview on Soundslam with Kareem Edouard, who directed the short film - Bling: Consequences and Repercussions. Which tackles the issues behind Hip Hop’s obsession with diamonds and the continued illegal diamond trade in Africa, widely considered blood or conflict diamonds. It’s narrated by the infamous Chuck D of Public Enemy acclaim. And can in fact, be viewed at http://wghfilms.com/bling.htm by pc, mac, ipod, and psp. So check that out.

But what also brought me to posting this today, was something Kareem said in the aforementioned interview:

“I came across one rapper a couple of weeks ago, I won’t mention names, who said to me that he wouldn’t wear a diamond unless an arm got cut off for it. I never thought that I would hear that from another human, but they never cease to amaze/ disappoint me.”

And it got me to thinking, how can the situation really be truly resolved, if those who are idolized in our society and held up as mentors … perpetuate such ignorance and devastation themselves? What will the bling revolution leave as its legacy, when the blood let, is finally sown down the line of its toils?

Why should we avoid conflict diamonds

    June 3, 2006, 3:06 pm

Article delving into why avoiding blood diamonds, is so very necessary.

Should we be concerned about buying conflict or blood diamonds? What are the moral and financial implications of buying blood diamonds?

Buying diamonds for most people comes at a time when they are buying an item of jewellery such as diamond earrings, an engagement ring etc. This not only involves a major financial investment but an emotional one as well. The jewellery is likely to be kept in the family for years to come and so being confident about what you are buying is paramount.

In a way you need to feel that you are not only buying your diamonds from a reputable source but also that your supplier, whether it be an online retailer or traditional high street shop, obtains it’s goods from sources that also meet certain social, political and environmental responsibilities.
