What Are Conflict Diamonds?

So what the heck IS a “conflict diamond”?

I’m so glad you ask. Maybe now you won’t think I’m completely off my nut when I talk about how much I want one, and why I’m searching for alternative to diamonds, or, ideally, a conflict-free diamond provider I can trust.

From Wikipedia:

A conflict diamond (also called a blood diamond) is a diamond mined in a war zone and sold, usually clandestinely, in order to finance an insurgent or invading army’s war efforts. Nongovernmental organizations have also alleged the use of these diamonds in financing the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Furthermore, according to several sources, not the least of which are the UN and, I admit, Kanye West, conflict diamonds, or blood diamonds, are mined in horrible conditions, the workers are underpaid at the rate of near-slave labor, and we, the consumers, are overcharged for them.

So what can we do? Is there a way to have the best of both worlds - diamonds mined in socially-conscious ways, that are still reasonably priced? Are there companies with competitive pricing that actually realize that many of us care about that sort of thing? Do the companies that SAY they have conflict-free diamonds really have them? If so, how can we tell?

And, by the way, how can I get my man any number of these hints about diamonds and how to find an ethical one without actually saying, “If/When you propose, buy me a diamond, but not from there, there or there” without spoiling the romance?

Well, snookums, that’s what this resource is about. I will look for the answers and bring you diamond news and articles I find in the meantime. Deal?

PS - Sorry I called ya snookums. Just practicing.
